There is still kindness out there ![]()
This is the front of Libby’s school. Due to both sensory and mobility challenges, Libby uses a special door for pickup and drop-off. That little one waaaaaay over on the right side of the building. She also gets dropped off a little late and picked up a little early, to avoid hustle, bustle, and TRAFFIC, and make that transition time as smooth as possible for her.
She had special considerations like this in Belle Plaine, too. At Chatfield, we used a special door off the back parking lot that NOBODY else used for pickup/dropoff. That whole “pickup line crazy” is a parenting rite of passage I had not yet experienced before our move.
So our pickup time is 20 minutes before the other kiddos come outside. The pickup line begins at that other door on the left side of the picture, the main entrance. You can see that Libby’s special door is about 6-8 cars deep. (And I prefer to park right in front of the door, so I can see when she is coming and don’t have to stand around outside – especially in winter – and she can consistently expect the car to be a certain distance from the door, thus avoiding – most days – a complete meltdown and refusal to walk.)
On the first day of in-person school last fall, I naively rolled up right at 2:45, and was rudely awakened by how many others were already lined up for 3:05 pickup. In time, I found the sweet spot. I have to arrive by 2:30 to be the very first person and park right where I want. For the first few weeks, I got a couple weird looks, honks of the horn, and eventually people just learned to pull around me, the weirdo who comes early and parks in the middle of the line.
The first day of rain, I learned another lesson. Early-early is not early enough. Come earlier.
Same goes for the first day of snow.
And the first day of bitter cold.
As the year rolled on, people started to realize what I was doing and why. Started to save my spot. Wave me through. For the last few months, the super early-birds have started a line BEHIND my door, protecting my special spot for my special girl. They know both of our vehicles, and they wait for us to get in position, then pull ahead. I can even show up at 2:35 now!
Nobody really knows me here yet.
Knows our story.
Knows why this little girl refuses to walk if we’re more than 1-2 spaces off target.
Nobody really knows *just* how much this simple act of kindness means the absolute world to me.
But they do it anyway.
Reason #1,344,628 I don’t want the current school year to end. ![]()
